This serene waterway, lined with lush forests and sandy beaches, is Cambodia's most vital dolphin sanctuary—a sacred refuge for the critically endangered Irrawaddy freshwater dolphin.

As of 2017, this stretch shelters 92 Irrawaddy dolphins, the largest concentration in the country. These gentle, mystical creatures, with their rounded foreheads and shy smiles, are classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, with only a few hundred remaining worldwide. Their survival is threatened by habitat loss, pollution, and fishing nets.

Spotting one as it surfaces through the calm, amber waters is an unforgettable privilege—a poignant reminder of nature's fragility. Each sighting offers a fleeting connection to a species fighting for survival, inspiring deep appreciation for Cambodia's biodiversity and the urgent need to protect it.

The island is perfectly suited for exploration by bike. A roughly 9- to 10-kilometer flat trail encircles Koh Trong, making it an ideal and leisurely ride for cyclists of all skill levels. The route follows a mostly narrow concrete path that winds through a landscape of breathtaking contrasts. A highlight here is a visit to Wat Nokor, a serene 11th-century temple where ancient brickwork stands in quiet harmony with a modern pagoda—a fascinating blend of old and new. For a deeper adventure, hop on a bicycle or take a car across the wooden bridge to Koh Paen, a rural island nestled in the Mekong. Here, time seems to stand still as locals sustain themselves through fishing and farming tobacco and sesame, their traditional livelihoods passed down through generations. It's the perfect place to wander through village lanes, witness cottage industries up close—from hand-weaving to sesame-seed pressing—and experience the unhurried, heartfelt rhythm of rural Cambodia.

Spotting one is both a privilege and a reminder of their fragility.

Upon arrival, you'll board a traditional wooden boat and glide through flooded forests and emerald banks, past stilted villages where life revolves around the river. Your local guide will navigate to deeper pools where dolphins often surface. Watch for subtle signs—a ripple, a soft exhale, or the graceful arc of a gray back. When a pod appears, their rounded heads and playful smiles emerge briefly before vanishing into the depths, leaving only widening rings behind.
